There is no violation in this situation based on the Basketball Rules Fundamentals #5 on Page 71 of the 2010-2011 rules book. Basketball Rule Fundamental #5 states: Neither the dribble nor traveling rule operates during the jump ball, throw-in or free throw.

Shooting Foul?

With .3 (three tenths) of a second or less left in a tied game and each team in the bonus, Team A has a throw-in at its end line near their basket. A1 throws the ball to A5 who catches the ball and quickly shoots. A5 is fouled by B5 just prior to the horn ending the period. The ball goes through A's basket.

Do you count the basket? Do you call the foul? Is it a shooting foul? What do you do in this play?

A1 is out-of-bounds for a throw-in. Whiling holding the ball, A1 bounces the ball cleary still outside the boundary line, holds the ball again, then releases for throw-in to A2? What's the ruling and the rule#?

Is this a no-call; common foul; personal foul; intentional foul; or flagrant foul? What is your call and what is the penalty? Suppose the basket was unsuccessful... What is your call and penalty?

Team A steals the ball from Team B in Team B's front court and begins what should be an uncontested fast break for an easy score. However, the Team B player grabs Team A's jersey in an attempt to keep Team A from scoring. The official blows his/her whistle. What is the call? Is it inadvertent whistle, common foul, intentional foul, or flagrant foul? Based on your call what is the penalty?

The definition for basket interference in 4-6-2 says the following:

Basket interference occurs when a player:

ART. 2 . . .Touches the ball while any part of the ball is within the imaginary
cylinder which has the basket ring as its lower base.

Based upon that, I have a violation by Team B for basket interference. Award 2 points to Team A.

Since it is a violation for thrower A1 to throw the ball directly into the basket from out of bounds(9-2-7), what happens if B1 touches the throw-in pass while the ball is in the cylinder above A's basket?

10 Second Backcourt Count-(testing forum)

I finally found the answer to my question. It was in the 2008-2009 Interpretations from the NFHS. It is as follows:

SITUATION #8
A1 is dribbling in his/her frontcourt when B1 deflects the ball into A1's backcourt, The ball is bouncing towards the end line in A's backcourt while A1 and B1 give chase. B1 and A1 each contact the ball, but neither gain control. Finally, after numerous attempts by each player, A1 gains possession deep in team A's backcourt. When does the 10-second count begin anew for team A?
RULING: The count starts as soon as the ball goes in the backcourt since team control has not ended. (4-12; 9-8)

After the timeout or if there is no timeout, B1 will be shooting 2 or 3 shots in situation 1 above and one shot in situation 2, with players lined up along the lane in both situations and play will proceed from that point.

I would want to stop play before the teams come back down court and if possible while Team A has possession or during a dead ball. Of course the worse scenario is a steal by team B and they start a fastbreak back down court...... hmmm.

You are correct in awarding the ball to team B for throw-in after team A violated. Team B is consequently entitled to the AP arrow, and the throw-in spot for the violation is at the same throw-in spot that team A previously had. (Rule 9, section 2, article 8)

This is a throw in violation by A. The throw in ended when A violated. A throw in is awarded to B for the violation, and the arrow is changed to point towards B. I believe the throw in is from the end line near the violation however that I'm not 100% on. I'll check the case book.

Now practically speaking, I'm probably asking the player to fix his/her uniform and then leaving it alone. If the player is persistently wearing the uniform improperly, then I think it would be appropriate to direct him/her to leave the game.

Correct, the rules provides the officials a method to remove a player who wants to make a joke of the game. I agree we should attempt to get the players to comply with wearing the uniform properly. A good way to address this is when a player is attempting to come in as a sub, if they are not properly dressed, do not allow them until the next available time for substitues and if the uniform is worn properly. It will correct the problem.

I was wondering it that was what you meant. Also if the Captain is a designated starter, then he must be one of the 5 players that start the game, except due to injury, illness, illegal equipment, etc as allowed by rule.

These quick plays are why it is so important to be focused during inactive moments and dead balls. Good communication with your partner will help stop this play before it can reach the point of a throw-in. Many times it is your partner who will catch this play and get you out of trouble. Definetly blow your whistle immediately and stop the throw-in. At least we now have a case play to help us out in this situation if we go brain dead. Dont go brain dead.

It is absolutely appropriate to blow the whistle and inform team A that it should be team B's ball for a throw-in. That's the best way to prevent the violation and/or warning. As officials, we must allow both teams to compete equally.

Ahh thats interesting. I posted so long ago for my first time, so you may be correct on that. So every, try a post! LOL Yes the font for the text is bad. In fact your last response is black out, but if I highlite it, it shows up in blue so I can read it. Maybe we need to check our sources, or fonts or something. It is certainly a work in progress. But I am excited to see more officials posting threads and giving responsed. GRATZ!!

Immediately following a goal or free throw by Team A, A1 inbounds the ball to A2 and A2 subsequently throws the ball through A's basket. What, if anything, may the official do?

You are absolutely correct, and the key to getting the play right is to referee the defense. In this case, we officials must know if the defender's hands start and remain straight up. Some defenders extend the hands/arms out toward the offense as they are moving them in a vertical position. Pick up the defense early, especially if it is a secondary defender.

Good question, Rule 4-45 Art 4 states "The defender should not be penalized for leaving the floor vertically or having his/her hands and arms extended within his/her vertical plane."
What we have to watch for is defensive B1's arms that are outside the vertical plane and actually over or into A1 or B1s body leans into A1 as in 4-45 Art 6.

Ahh good question. During intermissions, A1 would be considered "bench personel" per rule 4-34-1 & 2. However, during timeouts, A1 is still considered a "player" per case play 4.34.1. This is important because you could have a technical fouls during an intermission that would apply to the player(s) who are now bench personnel and thus indirectly to the head coach too. see Case Play 4.34.2. This would also apply to disqualified players. Once the coach is notified of the DQd player, the player is then bench personnel.

Ha, you are funny Julius. I am not even in the same league as you regarding officiating skills, but I do aspire to be like you. However I do enjoy discussing rules and all the odd things that can happen. I hope more officials start using this forum to discuss rules.
Regarding a violation... I do not believe we can call a violation in this case. To violate, a player must break the plane of the lane line with a foot or touch the court anywhere outside their 36" x 36" lane box. If he did not touch the court while untieing the shoe, then I have to go with an unsporting technical in my opinion.

B1 fouls A1 in an unsuccessful attempt for goal. The calling official has reported the foul and is in position for the free throws. The administering official has given all instructions and signals. Team B is properly occupying the required spaces, but A1 (the free throw shooter) is still talking with his coach. This FT attempt is not following at timeout. What, if any is the penalty for A1 not being ready to shoot the merited FTs?

If the ball is at A1's disposal and A2 does not touch the court outside his/her lane box, then I would not have a violation. However, I may deem this unsporting and assess a technical foul. I would blow it dead immediately, report the tech, clear the lane for the final shot of the multiple FTs. Then have Team B supply a shooter for the Tech, 2 shots with lane clear at B's basket and a throw-in at the division line for team B.

Team A has the ball in their front court. Team A attempts a pass and the ball is deflected by Team B into Team A's backcourt. Both A1 and B1 run after the ball. Does the 10-second backcourt count begin when the ball touches the backcourt? Or do you start the count only if A1 reestablishes player control? Team control has not ended.

RULE 9

SECTION 8: TEN SECONDS

A player shall not be, nor may his/her team be, in continuous control of a ball

which is in his/her backcourt for 10 seconds.

PENALTY: The ball is dead when the violation occurs and is awarded to the opponents for a throw-in from the designated out-of-bounds spot nearest the violation.

RULE 4

SECTON 12: CONTROL, PLAYER AND TEAM

ART. 1 . . . A player is in control of the ball when he/she is holding or dribbling a live ball inbounds. There is no player control when, during a jump ball, a jumper catches the ball prior to the ball touching the floor or a non-jumper, or during an interrupted dribble.

ART. 2 . . . A team is in control of the ball:

a. When a player of the team is in control.

b. While a live ball is being passed among teammates.

c. During an interrupted dribble.

ART. 3 . . . Team control continues until:

a. The ball is in flight during a try or tap for goal.

b. An opponent secures control.

c. The ball becomes dead.

ART. 4 . . . While the ball remains live a loose ball always remains in control of the team whose player last had control, unless it is a try or tap for goal.

ART. 5 . . . Team control does not exist during a jump ball or the touching of a

rebound, but is re-established when a player secures control.

ART. 6 . . . Neither team control nor player control exists during a dead ball,

throw-in, a jump ball or when the ball is in flight during a try or tap for goal.
